This may be a break out performance for many of us... you know I'm looking at you Mr P. We're all drafting our Oscar acceptance speeches now! Or... maybe we shouldn't quit our day jobs! Seriously, props to all the actors and the fine ladies behind the scenes for shooting and editing this together; especially considering that I was absent on the day of the majority of the filming. avengers from Stephanie Itzen on Vimeo. Totally awesome site that lets you legally download a huge selection of free comics from the early 50's! You've got to register- but it's free. Get your Wolf Poison on y'all. Here's the link. What is STEAM education and why, in my humble opinion is it better than the much ballyhooed STEM education? STEM education, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics intensive education, is being touted as a way for students across the nation to stay competitive with an ever increasing flat, globalized economy. I love all those academic disciplines. I love STEM, I do. I've coached Jr. FIRST LEGO League. I've taught Principles of Engineering from the Project Lead the Way canon. I just think when you add the Arts, STEM gets better as it turns into STEAM. We can teach our students STEM, but without Creativity that the Arts are so key in delivering, we're missing something. I launched a project just over three weeks ago. This mini-arcade game project (that's why we had such an unusual field trip to Chuck E. Cheese) is truly a STEAM project. Students measured, scaled down, reduced, cut, strengthened, glued, measured again, painted, improvised, weighed, tested, and drilled, all while asking the questions "Is this good? Do I like this? If not, what could I do so I might like it more?" These qualitative questions aren't asked with as much frequency in STEM education. STEAM forces kids to think in this increasingly important way. Finally, I want to show this little video highlighting the game "Hole in One." It's amazing that students are learning very basic principles of electricity while wiring a scavenged sewing machine motor with a dimmer switch to make their machine functional. Yea STEAM! I just wrote up a proposal to talk at this conference on how to use Schoology to create authentic self-assessments for PBL classrooms. It's way too early for me to pretend that I'm an expert on Schoology- but I'm always stretching, trying to learn and teach new things. Wish me luck. Trying to see Denver y'all!
One of my favorite Youtubers. Great advice on achieving success I've gleaned from Casey Neistat in a different interview... "Work hard and be brave."I absolutely love this guy. AMAZING dancer! I love his uplifting message. Do what you love. See where it takes you. I made my Crafts students do some gestural drawings based on his Pumped up Kicks video. And by the way- I'd give up almost anything to be able to dance like this! Such a great video- a must see. This is how I see STEAM > STEM education. I love her little line about her ailment of "CCD, Creative Compulsive Disorder." Truly a beautiful and tragic little video.
Launching a new project with my 9th graders that I'm really excited about. I've been thinking about this project for about a year now. "Olde Timey Mythology." Students will research little known mythological creatures (great examples might be the Wendigo, Kitsune or anything from this list) from around the world and then make an "olde timey" poster of their mythological creature. To get that "olde timey" feel we're looking at old tattoo flash, hand painted signs, World Weekly News covers, and sideshow posters. Like Bart Scott said, "Can't Wait!"
I think there could be plenty of uses of VIne in the classroom. Stop motion animation anyone? |
